Electronic Performance Support Systems (EPSS) are interactive computer-based environments that provide on-the-job support to facilitate task performance.

EPSS provides the electronic infrastructure that captures, stores, and distributes knowledge throughout an organization to enable it to learn faster than its competitors.

An EPSS helps an organization to reduce the cost of training staff while increasing productivity and performance. It empowers an employee to perform tasks with a minimum amount of external intervention or training. By using this type of system an employee, especially a new employee, will not only be able to complete their work more quickly and accurately, but as a secondary benefit they will also learn more about their job and their employer's business.

Reasons a performance support approach is increasingly attractive:

• The work force is in information overload. The total volume of business information, said to be doubling every two to three years, is growing exponentially.
• The traditional training approach is not working some estimate that as much as half of the $50 billion that American corporations spend on formal training is wasted. A growing research body concludes that learning is far more effective when it takes place in context of work.
